A plus for our patients who fly in for surgery with Dr. Schafer is the ability to rest and relax in San Diego as they begin to heal after the surgery. San Diego offers moderate temperatures in the most beautiful of settings: on the Pacific Ocean with historic architecture, warm breezes, good shopping and an array of amusements and attractions.

How long will I need to stay in San Diego?
Most patients need to stay a minimum of three days after their surgery. This gives the body a chance to heal and for the patient to have a follow-up appointment with Dr. Schafer. However, you can easily extend your time to accommodate any time period.

What activities should I expect to do while I'm recuperating?
The day of your surgery you will want to relax at your hotel room for the rest of the day. You may feel tired or "out of it". Don't expect to have the energy to do any sight seeing or even to go out for dinner. You will want to rest, rest, rest, and rest.

The first two days after your surgery you will probably still want to rest, but some walking will be good for you. You could plan simple, short strolls that don't require much energy.

When will I be able to see the sights?
By the third day you should be up for more walking. This would be a good day to take in Old Town or other parts of San Diego.

Do I need someone with me?
It is not required, but many people feel more comfortable having family or a friend with them. All hotels will accommodate an extra person in a room. We also provide an after care specialist to stay with you if you would like, for the first few hours after your surgery.

The Follow Up Appointment

On the third day after surgery most people have a follow-up appointment scheduled with Dr. Schafer. At this appointment Dr. Schafer can monitor your healing progress and give you instructions for the rest of your recovery. For most people, this appointment is all that is needed - no more required follow-ups are typically required.

What happens if there are complications before my follow-up appointment?
You will be given a number that you can call at any time after your surgery. Your health is the number one priority.

What if I have an illness separate from the surgery?
We are affiliated with many other physicians in the area. We will give you a list of doctors or clinics that you could call if you need to see a general practitioner or another type of specialist.

Will I need to go in for multiple visits?
Most patients do not require multiple follow-up appointments with Dr. Schafer.

Recovery is an important part of the surgical process. Giving your body the gift of rest and relaxation can help your recovery be easier and in some cases can even speed up recovery. San Diego is the perfect place to relax. With its temperate climates and beautiful surroundings it is the perfect location to recuperate and heal.
