The beam of light travels at a specific frequency that is absorbed by the red blood cells in vascular lesions and by melanin in pigmented lesions. The laser heats up these cells and destroys them while leaving the healthy skin cells intact. While the results can be dramatic, the side effects are often minimal. Some patients report feeling a slight stinging sensation during the treatment followed by some redness, which usually disappears within 2-4 hours.
