Cosmetic surgery has increased in popularity over the past 10 years. With this increase in popularity, attitudes have changed as well. Fewer people are growing older gracefully, while more and more are accepting the cosmetic surgery alternative.

Cosmetic surgery has undergone significant technological and conceptual changes in recent years. Technological changes include the increasing use of the laser for facial cosmetic surgery, and minimally invasive techniques for the face, breast and body contouring surgery.

Minimally invasive surgery is done with the aid of a viewing scope and specially designed surgical instruments. The scope allows the surgeon to perform surgery through tiny openings.

COSMETIC BREAST SURGERY
SILICONE FILLED BREAST IMPLANTS GET FDA APPROVAL

On November 17, 2006, the FDA completed its review of silicone-filled breast implants and gave them the approval to begin distribution in the United States.

The implant is indicated for breast augmentation for women at least 22 years old and for breast reconstruction for women of any age. Breast augmentation includes primary breast augmentation to increase the breast size, as well as revision surgery to correct or improve the result of a breast augmentation surgery. Breast reconstruction includes reconstruction to replace breast tissue that has been removed due to cancer or trauma or that has failed to develop properly.

The FDA reviewed an extensive amount of data from clinical trials of women studied for up to four years deeming the product safe and effective.

Women considering breast implant surgery should know that they will probably need breast implant surgery at least once later in life.
