Procedure Information
- Dr. Schafer can use any incision site but prefers transaxillary (armpit).
- With the armpit incision there is no need to cut through breast skin, milk ducts, fat, muscle or breast tissue.
- The armpit incision is a single, one-inch incision in an armpit crease, which reduces scar visibility until it complete disappears.
- Within a few months, there is no visible scar.
- Like putting your hand in your pants' pocket, Dr. Schafer slides the breast implant under the muscle in the front of your armpit (pectoralis major).
- If you choose to have an incision made in the lower portion of the breast, the breast tissue is raised to create a pocket for the implant.
- You may choose to have the implant placed over or under the chest wall muscle.
- Most women prefer this placement because it will NOT interfere with breastfeeding, mammograms or nipple sensitivity.
- Different sizes of implants may be used to correct breast asymmetry.
- Dr. Schafer's implanting technique gives him the option of using inflatable implants allowing him to fill the implants during the procedure to compensate for asymmetry.
Recovery Information
- Dr. Schafer's Rapid Recovery Method uses a safer alternative to general anesthesia which aides in an easier and quicker recovery.
- Dr. Schafer's implant technique decreases bruising so patients can return to work quickly.
- Dr. Schafer has established The Weekend Recovery so you can have your procedure on Friday, and be ready and able to go back to work on Monday.
- You'll be able to return to light exercises in a matter of days.
- Dr. Schafer's Rapid Recovery Method utilizes the On-Q Post Operative Pain Relief System.
- This is a non-narcotic, local anesthetic that is delivered directly to the surgical site for up to five days.
- Pain is relieved quickly without impacting other bodily functions.
- The On-Q system is simple, yet elegant and requires little management or intervention by the patient or caregiver.
- On-Q is readily accepted by patients and can be clipped to clothing or carried in a small pouch.
- This system encourages a return to normal function because pain is relieved and the patient's mind is clear.
Breast Augmentation Risks And Complications
- There is a risk of the implant rupturing. Since breast implants usually contain a saline solution, the body readily absorbs the solution without causing any harm. A second surgery may be necessary to correct the problem.
- Varying amounts of scarring depending on the types of incisions used.
- Capsular Contracture occurs when the scar tissue and the area around the implant tighten and the implant becomes hard.
- Implants have on occasion moved from the implant sight.
- Infection can occur at the incision site.
- Adverse reaction to anesthesia.
- Excessive bleeding

"It was wonderful. I really wasn't aware I had an incision because it didn't hurt. There was just no pain. Almost immediately, I was on my feet and really didn't have any problems at home going up and down the stairs."
